Social housing can do commercial

As the latest member of the Torus team, I wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself and provide a brief insight into my role.

Those who know me from previous organisations, most recently Mitie, and my role on the Torus Board, will know that I relish a challenge and like to hit the ground running to produce results. (What else would you expect? In my spare time I enjoy competing in triathlons and running marathons!)

My new role, as commercial director comes with the opportunity to help shape the fortunes of an emerging organisation. Torus is, after all, only a little over a year old. It’s also a business that is actively looking for new and diverse income streams to support ambitious growth and development plans.

The fact that my role even exists in the context of social housing is testament to the appetite the Torus group has to evolve, shape its own future and create a buffer against risk.

I’m heading Torus Property Solutions, our commercial subsidiary. We specialise in a wide range of repair & maintenance services and are also active in the new build housing and property refurbishment markets. But, and I stress the point, we are not a DLO. Without any disrespect to the great work being delivered by our DLO teams we want to differentiate ourselves from both our own DLO, and other in-house DLOs, by operating in a more entrepreneurial manner with a highly competitive and flexible cost base.

Extensive private sector experience within the team we employ means that we’re project focused, responsive and results-driven. (Think the A-Team in hard hats and high vis vests. I’ll let you decide which members of the team are which characters!)

Many other housing associations have dabbled with commerciality. But there’s a difference between thinking commercially and acting it. If you’re going to talk the talk you have to be prepared to walk the walk. We aim to build a strong reputation for consistent, high quality delivery at competitive market rates and become a partner of choice for a wide range of organisations.

Twenty days into my new role and I am confident that the services we offer can rival anything else on the market. All you have to do is put us to the test.
